Whilst we’ll happily consume a cocktail or two in any season, there’s something about the heat of summer that makes an icy concoction all the more appealing. From a brand new range from a veteran hotel bar to a ‘healthy’ blend served in a basement – here’s some of our favourite summer cocktail menus to keep you cool in the coming months.
Like the rest of London, we can’t get enough of the ever-growing number of ramen joints. We love them all, but our current favourite has to be Shoryu Ramen for both their super spice-charged Piri Piri Tonkotsu and Carnaby Street outpost. With an alfresco seating area on the ground floor courtyard of Kingly Court, it’s the only acceptable way to consume a boiling bowl of noodle soup as the mercury rises. Making things even more interesting, they’ve just added a short and fruity summer cocktail menu blending Japanese flavours such as macha to brilliant yet boozy effect.
The American Bar
It would be criminal to talk about summer cocktails with not a mention of that British staple Pimm’s, which is why we had to include The American Bar’s latest endeavor. Launching to coincide with Wimbledon, The Savoy will open their extremely rare 40-year-old Vintage Pimm’s collection to whip up a limited number of concoctions drafted by Head Bartender Erik Lorincz. Get in quick though; once the bottles are gone, they will be gone forever…
The Vault at Milroy’s
Whilst a Soho basement bar hidden behind a bookcase of a whisky shop, might not be the first spot you’d think of to sup a summer cocktail, just hear us out. The belowground location leaves the temperature cool, meaning you’ll remain totally unflustered by the heat wave. The speakeasy vibes add to a seasonable sense of adventure, not to mention make it far less packed than other nearby drinking options. Plus the cocktails are really ruddy good. We tried the Unagi with jasmine, umeshu and peach bitters, The Buckley with cherry and pear infused rum, lime and egg white and a gorgeous Gintrification with elderflower liquor.
Discount Suit Company
When you’re a huge fan of a bar, which is the case with us and independent cocktail joint the Discount Suit Company, you don’t need much of an excuse to go. So, as you can imagine, news of a new summer menu had us out of our seats faster than you could say ‘shaken not stirred’. Get yourself down to Wentworth Street near Spitalfields Market for seasonal sips including ‘Pollo Loco’ with white tequila, St Germain, Absinthe, lemon, cucumber and honey water and (one we’re coveting) ‘Dane-ted Love’ with Akvavit, Amaro Montenegro, lemon juice and lemon grass syrup.
The Donovan Bar at Brown’s Hotel
Brown’s, the Mayfair-based hotel owned by Rocco Forte, has been around since 1837 and they recently decided to put this history to use in a brand new cocktail menu at their famous Donavan Bar (named after British photographer Terance Donovan). Rather than focus soley on it’s own past, it playfully takes inspiration from ten of Rocco Forte’s international hotels. Try a ‘Churchill Martini’ or ‘The Secret Garden’, all delivered by the expert hands of an establishment that knows a thing or two about serving its patrons in style.
