For just six Saturday’s in November and December, the Sambal Shiok team will be serving up steaming hot dishes of their prawn curry laksa at the Newman Arms in Fitzrovia.
Usually found serving up her authentic style of Malaysian hawker dishes at Street food markets across London, Mandy Yin set up Sambal Shiok last year after spotting a gap for quality Malaysian food in the London food scene.
The residency will also feature the talents of writer and wine consultant Zeren Wilson of Bitten and Written, who has been invited to select a variety of Rieslings to pour alongside this spicy comfort dish.
We popped by to try out some of Mandy’s rave-worthy soup last weekend and were blown away by their signature prawn curry laksa served with 50/50 egg/rice noodles. Cooling the heat from the fiery broth and adding a tangy edge were some incredibly aromatic German Rieslings from producers Joachim Flick and Melsheimer. The wines are sourced exclusively from specialist wine shop The Winery in Maida Vale and are available by the glass and bottle being sold at some very attractive prices.
Laksa lovers are advised to act quickly – the first three Saturday’s have already sold out and there’s already talk of adding more space downstairs to cope with demand.
There will be two sittings each night, 5.30pm and 7.30pm, with tables allocated for two hours. £10 tickets can be purchased at sambalshiok.eventbrite.co.uk.
