Every year the epic journey of the big five across the African Serengeti signals the mass migration of humans to Kenya to watch it on safari.
To those in the know, July to October is the time to go. Thousands of beautiful Serengeti lions and giant herds of wildebeest will join leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and monster crocodiles in their journey; which proves an unsurprisingly magnificent sight when experienced in the flesh. So, in honour of safari season we’ve found the best safari lodges for you to stay in, should you be lucky enough to visit.
What to See
The 12 tardis-like tents sit raised up on stone decks and are pitched under thatch shelters to keep them nice and cool in the summer. There’s a wonderfully clear pool to cool off in (and fireplaces for the winter), and the tents are gorgeously decorated and furnished to make you feel totally at home.
This classic bush style camp with traditional Meru style tents is semi-nomadic, tracking the path of the wildebeest and zebra as they migrate (but don’t worry, they won’t move while you’re staying there!). With brilliant local guides and an encyclopedic knowledge of the serengeti, a stay at the Serengeti Safari camp is a truly amazing experience.
The Kicheche Bush Camp in Kenya consists of 6 comfortably furnished tents with running water, 24-hour solar power, and hot and cold showers. Kicheche is very eco-conscious and committed to the conservation of the national park in which they are built, so the tents are unfenced and hidden making your stay a truly natural experience.
Located in the stunning Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, the Exploreans Mara Rianta Camp is the last word in luxury. With their spa, excellent restaurant and exhilarating masai dancing displays, a stay here is both relaxing and cultural.
Based in Samburu National Reserve, Northern Kenya, Larsens Camp boasts a glistening swimming pool, jacuzzi and a massage service on the deck facing the game reserve. Each of the tents are equipped with hardwood floors, bathrooms and a private terrace, to ensure total privacy and serenity. The tents are east facing too, so you’ll wake up every morning bathed in gorgeous golden light.
