John Gregory-Smith fell for the rustic charms of the Incirliev Hotel in the stunning stone village of Alacati
I have just returned from my second visit to Alacati in Turkey, a stunning stone village on the Cesme peninsular unlike anywhere else in the world. The little village is a protected site, meaning it’s picture perfect, with beautiful boutique hotels, close proximity to some of the most incredible white sandy beaches and a rocking restaurant scene. Bouganvilla flowers spill over every building, painting the village an array of pinks, purples and pastel whites.
This time I was there in November, beating the summer crowds and taking advantage of the slow pace of off-season life. We stayed in a charming hotel called Incirliev, run by husband and wife team Sabahat and Osman.
After falling in love with Alacati, where they had a summerhouse, the couple found a plot centred around a one hundred year old fig tree. They bought it and turned into a stunning 8 room hotel in 2008.
We took the terrace room, high in the old house, with stone walls, wooden beams, eggshell blue windows and a huge roaring fire. The weather was perfect for me. Warm in the day and cold at night, hence the fire.
We arrived late and woke to bright sunshine flooding into the little courtyard in the centre of the hotel. Osman and Sabahat joined us for breakfast and we feasted on a Turkish feast of cheese, eggs, parsley and plenty of tea. The wonderful couple told us about their life and family. By the end of the meal I wanted to move in permanently!
Osman was a rather keen jam maker. The fig tree being a lure for him when they bought the place. So after breakfast, we drank more tea and he served up some vibrant jams, including a bright pomegranate, fragrant rose and a scented lavender.
We left full and happy to explore the Alacati. Many of the restaurants and bars are shut over winter, but we ambled along drinking coffee and eating everything in site.
We returned to Incirliev hotel just as the temperature dropped, to another roaring log fire and bed strewn with woven rugs and huge fluffy pillows.
Rooms at the Incirliev Hotel Alacati start from €90 a night up to €160 in high season for a standard room.
