John Gregory-Smith fell in love with the new dishes at Hawksmoor Guildhall
Hawksmoor Guildhall has added a few new dishes to their menu. A prelude to a roll out or just to test the water? I am not sure. But either way I was lucky enough to get in and try a selection. And despite Hawksmoor’s reputation as a meat Mecca and Guildhall being the kind of restaurant you might see a hazing initiation going on at the back of the vaulted dining room, most of the dishes were summery and light.
From the new starters we tried a stunning octopus carpaccio (£8) that came in waif-like slithers, which were so thin they could have floated off the plate with a sneeze. Served simply in olive oil and a light tomato sauce, it was a stunning dish.
A fresh spring salad with creamy Graceburn cheese (£9.50) was a medley of shaved radish, carrot and asparagus, with sweet pea shoots and a light dressing. And finally, fried oysters with jalapeño tartare (£13.50) that tasted like posh scampi that even someone as opposed to oysters as myself happily demolished
The mains have been ‘beefed’ up with more seafood, including bream with garlic rosemary and chilli, hake with green harrisa and lobster three ways – whole, rolled or mac-cheesed. We had the lobster roll with Siriacha and yuzu mayonnaise (£25). It was utterly glorious; a massive slab of a roll that was packed with huge pieces of lobster, slathered in the most incredible spicy, umami mayo.
We also devoured the lobster mac n’ cheese (£25). Now if the Lord himself turned his gallant hands to make this simple side, he would not get as near to perfection as this Hawksmoor version. The glory came oozing out of a small oven dish with a golden Parmesan topping. On the side, a saffron heavy lobster bisque to pour over the top. The mac cheese was rich and creamy with wonderful pieces of sweet lobster and that bisque, running through it gave every mouthful a savoury sucker punch.
Hawksmoor Guildhall is one of the finest steak houses in London. Now with the new dishes on the menu they are branching out to become one the finest restaurants in London.
