A city bolthole in the heart of Hammersmith that is a real slice of London
Nothing says London quite like a London pub, and the Brook Green Hotel on Sherpherd’s Bush Road is housed in a quintessential London pub. The building has been superbly restored with modern fixings, while retaining traditional elements with the central bar and Young’s draught beer.
The refurbishment continues with the 17 rooms. On a rainy February evening we arrived in off the wet streets to our corner room, which was a perfect shelter from the storm. Chicly designed with Scandi-style modern furniture, huge angle poised lamps, alphabet wallpaper and an enormous comfy bed topped with colourful cushions, the room overlooks the park opposite and although it faces the busy road was well insulated from the din.
The bathroom was equally spectacular with a walk-in rain shower, a double sink and a deep tub that worked its restorative magic on our cold and soggy limbs on the wintry night. From the tray of complimentary Tea Pig teas, to the array of natural bath products and little chocolates left on our pillow everything about the room made us feel delightfully looked after.
With the whole of London town at your feet you probably won’t be staying in, but a drink in the downstairs Smith’s basement bar will set you up with a superb cocktail, we tried an expertly shaken Elderflower and Ginger Martini. If you do choose to dine in house, the pub offers the classics, fish and chips and good pies, we tried a decent modern brioche-bun burger and a more interesting scallop and chorizo dish on our waiter’s recommendation. We followed up with a croissant bread and butter pudding that fulfilled its stodgy, custardy requirements and a chocolate brownie.
The next morning I expected the pub to be quiet for breakfast and I couldn’t have been more wrong the whole pub hummed with groups of friends in for brunch. We ate some creamy eggs benedict and piles of croissants with the morning papers before heading on our way.
If you’re looking for a stunning room for a night or weekend in London whether you’re taking in a show in the West End or having a shopping extravaganza on Oxford Street the Brook Green is a wonderful boutique stay close to the action. And with rooms so welcoming you might have a hard time getting out the door.
