What to See
Lily Vanilli is East London’s queen of baking. She sells her flirty and fresh cupcakes on Columbia Road home to London’s best flower market, which seems fitting as she decorates her cakes with edible flowers and fresh fruit.
This is the place for cool and fun flavours. Lola creates delicious and innovative cakes, such as the Mojito with lime and coconut base and a lime, mascarpone and mint top, and the Baklava an almond base with a honey cream cheese top decorated with a piece of baklava.
London’s pioneering cupcake bakery on Portobello Road now has outlets all over London. The original bakery is still churning out original flavour with new biscuit-themed Chocolate Chip Cookie and Custard Cream flavours for August. These cute cakes are deliciously girly with pastel-coloured frosting and kitsch sprinkles.
These are truly trendy cupcakes, with flavours such as salted caramel topped off with fleur de sel; Toblerone; and tea and digestive, there’s sure to be something for everyone. There are shops in Primrose Hill and Covent Garden, but you may have to queue at weekends for these coveted cups of joy.
No longer just a treat for denizens of Bloomsbury, Bea’s has been exported to St Paul’s, Farringdon and London Bridge. Bea’s is a true Americana outpost serving the most decadent cupcakes in the city. But the brand has developed into much more than cake with pop-up events and fabulous afternoon teas.
Another East Londoner, Violet Bakery sells their pretty wares at Broadway Market. Frosting flavours change with the seasons and are flavoured with fresh fruit purées, Valrhona chocolate and homemade flower cordials. Right now try the blackcurrant and vanilla flavour.
